Embed YouTube or Blip.tv Video

The internet version 2 is a rich experience, so we've been making some updates to the Web Editor to allow our users to add sound and visuals in a variety of ways.

YouTube and Blip.tv Video

If you don't have an account with either YouTube or Blip.tv click on the links on the names and go set one up, if you've already familiar, keep reading.

In the tool bar above the editor you should see a small movie icon ( see the image below ), click this to open the Movie Embeder, if you do not see this icon, you will need to clear your browser's cache - if there's a geek near-by, ask them how to do this.

YouTube is without doubt the most popular video sharing website on the web, and they provide a great range of tools to allow users to easily upload and distribute their videos to family & friends.

To add a YouTube video select YouTube from the sources option, then copy the link to the YouTube page and paste this in the second box, called Video URL.

Here is an example URL for a YouTube video:

Blip.tv is the open-source answer to YouTube and also offers a great range of free and easy to use tools to upload and share videos, Web Editor prefers the open ethics of Blip.tv, but we also have to admit it's a little harder to embed and obviously less popular, but we've included an option to use Blip.tv because we feel it's right to support software which supports open standards.

So, here's a quick guide how to get the right code to enter in our little box, from the Blip.tv website.

Firstly, go to one of your videos which you have uploaded to Blip.tv ( if you've not uploaded any yet, then best do that now! ), once you are viewing your video on the right have side you'll see a box with sharing options, here's an image of how it looks.

We've already changed the options to Embed and then from the code that is offered in the small grey window below, we only need what is highlighted in green. Copy and paste this into the Video URL box, and be sure to select Blip.tv as the source.

Cautionary Tale

A note of caution, all of these features are still in Beta, so you use them at your own risk - of course the worst that can happen is nothing, so be brave and try them out.

There is also the chance that Blip.tv or YouTube will change how their system works, which may have an effect on videos embeded in your website, we will try to keep our code and system working well with those of 3rd party systems, and if you find some faults, please let us know.
